English fluency scheme starts fetching jobs

The Gujarat government’s initiative to make Gujaratis fluent in English underwent its first test on Wednesday.

The Gujarat government’s initiative to make Gujaratis fluent in English underwent its first test on Wednesday. A total of 143 people who had trained under the state government’s SCOPE programme (Society for Creation of Opportunity through Proficiency in English) received job offers in Business and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (BPO and KPO) units.

SCOPE officials said 143 of the 470 participants received job offers at their first recruitment drive, which was commendable, more so since participants were A-level graduates (which is the most basic course of 90 hours and includes only listening and reading sessions, but no spoken English).

Joint CEO of SCOPE,Sandeep Sharma, said: “We were hoping for at least 1,000 people to turn up,but we realised it was our mistake to have held the recruitment drive on a weekday. It was in the daytime and the summer heat has had an effect on the turn-out as well.” He said these factors would be taken into consideration when they organise the second session in June-end.

Sharma added: “Besides this,we could not communicate with all the students who had passed out of the 425 centres we have across the state. That is also an aspect we will look into.”

Nirav Shah,Chief Operations Officer of the Tripada Day School SCOPE centre, which was also the venue for Wednesday’s recruitment drive, said only 82 job offers had been made by companies like Vodafone,Reliance,Axis Bank,Airtel and IMRB International.

Prahalad Makwana and Rakesh Nayak, two candidates selected for BPO jobs were happy with their offers.

Mehsana-based Nayak, who lost his first job as a salesperson with a major retail chain during the recession, said in halting English that he took up the SCOPE course because he felt English proficiency would help him get better job prospects. “Mera Angrezi pukka nahi hain, but training session will help,” he said.

Makwana, who has a Masters in Economics, agreed in equally halting English.

Parth Vasavda, who works with Azure, the company with which SCOPE signed an MoU to organise such recruitment drives, said the greatest benefit for the companies which recruited the candidates was cost cutting.
