Extending support to UPA on the women’s reservation bill,BJP today asked the government to ensure a cordial atmosphere at the time of voting on the measure or evolve a formula to deal with parties opposing it.

“Perhaps, this bill was waiting for a woman Speaker…

This has given us new hope. Since UPA has taken the initiative it should also ensure that it is passed amicably. It requires a constitutional amendment and division of votes. It cannot be passed in din,” senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said.

Or else, she said, the government should come up with a “formula” to accommodate the objections of political parties opposed to the bill.

The bill, which was initiated 14 years ago and tabled twice by BJP,has witnessed heated debates in Parliament.

When it was introduced in the Rajya Sabha last time, some MPs from RJD and Samajwadi Party had tried to snatch and tear copies of the bill as they are opposed to it in the present form. Congress,BJP and the Left parties support the bill.

Swaraj, who is also Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, told reporters that though this time the “numbers were there to get the bill passed” such a constitutional amendment should be passed amicably.
