Vandana Sehgal captures the story of Ramayana on canvas
The story of Ramayana finds form in Vandana Sehgals 65 paintings,on display at the Government Museum and Art Gallery,under the title Ramayana Paintings. The paintings,says Sehgal were inspired by her father Ram Varmas book,Before He was God: Ramayana,Reconsidered,Recreated. The text of the book was the inspiration behind this exhibition,and I completed the works in six months. It was a challenge,but an inspiring one, says Sehgal. Each canvas depicts a specific incident for instance,Ravana capturing Sita,Ravana Vadh,the coronation of Ram,Sitas exile,the birth of Lav-Kusha are all rendered in detail.
Painting has always been a passion for Sehgal,an architect by profession,and an alumnus of the Chandigarh College of Architecture. The works in the exhibition,all oil on canvas,portrays her comfort with spaces external and internal,dark and illuminated,sacred and profane,as she captures important episodes of the epic,all conveyed with careful attention to detail,but shorn of embellishments. Its such an absorbing and captivating theme and a journey that takes you to another world, says Sehgal,whose earlier solo exhibition was Between Spaces,in Lucknow (where she works as an associate professor). I am working on another project,depicting the holy cities of Benares,and Gaya, she smiles.
The exhibition is on till December 6.
