Even as March ends, college teachers wait for February salary

Even as March is heading for a close, around 1,000 college teachers in the city are yet to receive their February salary.

Even as March is heading for a close, around 1,000 college teachers in the city are yet to receive their February salary. Many of them are finding it difficult to make both ends meet as it is almost two months since they got their pay.

The financial crunch has become critical, especially ahead of the marriage season in April and May. “Many of the college teachers are facing serious problems as they cannot even pay the medical expenses of their family members,” said A K Walunj, secretary of Pune University Teachers’ Association (PUTA).

He claimed that the state government had signed a memorandum of understanding with the banks for depositing the salaries of these teachers in their accounts on the first day of every month. “The government has breached this agreement by not paying the February salary.”

He said the government had also promised to give the salary for the 44-day strike period. “The PUTA has been following up this matter with the Directorate of Higher Education. Our office bearers have met the directorate officials at least three times in the past month and we are waiting for the salary.”

The directorate, meanwhile, has conveyed to the colleges that the February and March salaries will be paid in the next two-three days. When contacted,SP College principal DN Sheth confirmed of receiving a message in this regard from the directorate.

Sources said the Sixth Pay Commission arrears will also be given to the teachers with the salaries. “The delay in payment of salaries was owing to the delay in calculation of these arrears,” one of them said.
