He was born a Muslim but his music had such a universal flavour that it did not require to belong to any community, caste or religion. He could enthrall anyone, from a paanwala to a king, with his playing.
Performing at the inaugural concert of the International Music Festival tonight (organised by Mumbai’s Samrat Club) was a big decision. Since I would have rather not played on the day of his demise. However, since the organisers decided to go ahead with the programme we have decided to dedicate the entire concert to Ustad Bismillah Khan. Every note that I play on my flute is in memory of him tonight.
