An ex-Army Colonel was arrested for allegedly duping overseas job aspirants by promising them jobs in countries like Korea, Germany and Malaysia.
The accused has been identified as Colonel David Daneil.
According to police, Shaji Narayan, hailing from Kerala, lodged complaint alleging that Daneil had published an advertisement in a leading newspaper in 2005 for an overseas job posting, listing his cellphone number and address for contact.
Narayan sent his biodata and other details to the address provided.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sindhu Pillai said, "Daneil organised an interview in Delhi in March 2006. He took Rs 50,000 as advance from Narayan and other respondents and asked them to wait for their visa."
"Daneil then called the complainant and others to a hotel at Karol Bagh and took Rs 2 lakh from each of them saying that the amount was needed for preparing some labour contracts. After that, he disappeared and could not be contacted," the DCP said.
The police recently received a tip-off that the accused was in Almora.
A team of officials was sent to the spot and Daneil was apprehended.
"We located Daneil by tracing his mobile phone. A case has been registered against the accused and further investigations are underway," a police officer said.
