Explain action taken in Mafatlal case: HC to police

Responding to a petition accusing socialite Sheetal Mafatlal of stealing a painting worth Rs 2 crore from the Mafatlal bungalow

Responding to a petition accusing socialite Sheetal Mafatlal of stealing a painting worth Rs 2 crore from the Mafatlal bungalow, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the police what action has been taken in the matter.

The Division Bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice Abhay Thipsay said,“Prima facie,it appears to be a dispute between husband and wife.” Sheetal Mafatlal is the estranged wife of industrialist Atulya Mafatlal.

The petition has been filed by Mangalya Trading and Investments Ltd,which handles the finances of the Mafatlal family. The painting is said to have been purchased by the firm.

Counsel for the petitioners,Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, said,“Why should the company suffer (because of the family dispute)? We are not demanding the arrest of the accused, but the police should at least investigate the case.” The case has been adjourned for two weeks.
