Express Exclusive: Call details of Bangkok bombers led cops to Israel Embassy attacker

The Delhi Police figured out the conspiracy behind the recent attack on an Israeli Embassy car by studying call details of the Bangkok bombers, who reportedly belong to the same Iranian module that planned assaults on Israeli targets in New Delhi, Georgia and Bangkok last month.

The Bangkok attack failed as the bombs, stored in a house in a busy locality, detonated accidentally.

Police sources said Houshang Afshar Irani, one of the Iranian suspects against whom warrants have been issued by a Delhi court, was in touch with one of the suspects arrested in Bangkok in the botched terror attempt.

Analysis of call details show Irani's local contact was Urdu journalist Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi, who was arrested on March 7 for his alleged role in the conspiracy.

Police said Kazmi was well aware of the plan. Cops said Irani recced the area around the Israeli Embassy in a scooty that he bought in April 2011. This vehicle was recovered from Kazmi's house after his arrest. Irani had provided a copy of his passport to buy the scooty, the cops said.

Kazmi has received remarkable foreign remittance since last year, officers said. The money deposited in his account was not in parity with his earnings, they said. ''We have details about his bank details as well as his wife's account where he deposited a part of the money,'' an officer said.

Five people, including the alleged bomber, were injured in three explosions in Bangkok's Ekkamai neighbourhood mid February. The first explosion occurred at a house rented by three Iranian nationals who, according to police, fled after explosives accidentally detonated. Two men fled while a third, wounded and disorientated from the blast, attempted to hail a taxi before throwing a grenade at the car and another at police. He missed his target and the grenade detonated in front of him, blowing off one leg and requiring the amputation of the other.
