After repeated media reports on the various flaws of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway that has claimed over 100 lives and seriously injured around 1,600 commuters and pedestrians till June this year, concessionaire DSC Ltd has finally decided to sit up and take action.
However, instead of tackling the lack of safety and security issues, the concessionaire is instead focussing on the issue of non-tag vehicles disrupting vehicular movement by entering tag lanes at the Delhi-Gurgaon toll booth (that has a daily traffic flux of approximately 1.80 lakh).
Starting Wednesday, the company has started a two-week drive to “educate” commuters. The concessionaire plans to initiate measures for stricter monitoring by deploying more traffic marshals at the entry points.
A makeshift booth has also been set up on the main carriageway for tag users with zero or negative balance for on-the-spot recharge. Attendants have also been deployed to assist commuters in placing the tag correctly on the wind screen.
Manoj Aggarwal, CEO, Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity Ltd, said: “The drive is aimed to discourage cash users from entering the tag lanes, which will help achieve lesser wait time.”
According to figures released by the concessionaire, 44 per cent of vehicles entering the tag lanes are cash users, while around 20 per cent vehicles have tags but have either zero or negative balance.
