Putting a big question mark on policing of the busy Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway,a toll collector was shot dead by a motorist at the Khekri Dhaula toll plaza around midnight Thursday. Officials said CCTV footage of the incident shows the assailant speeding away in a white Bolero jeep in the direction of Manesar.

Toll collector Umesh Kant Pandey had a verbal altercation with the Bolero driver over the toll payment of Rs 27.

According to officials, the Bolero occupant told Pandey that he was from a nearby village and was not required to pay the toll. At this,Pandey asked him for documentary proof.

This led to an exchange of words and Pandey, manning toll cabin number 11,shut the window. When he opened it later,he was shot. The Bolero sped away and CCTV footage showed the injured Pandey reaching for the cabin door before collapsing on the floor.

A spokesperson of the Delhi Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited said Pandey was immediately rushed to the Medanta Hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

“We at DSC Limited are deeply shocked and hurt by this gruesome incident and extend our deep condolences to the family of the deceased. A police complaint has been lodged and an investigation is on,” the spokesperson said.

“As a company policy, all our toll collectors are insured and we will ensure that suitable compensation reaches the family at the earliest. We request local authorities to step in and provide more vigilance and security to our toll collectors, ground staff and commuters so that such incidents can be avoided,” the spokesperson said.

Incidentally, though there is police presence in the Delhi toll gate of the expressway at night,no one was present at Kherki Dhaula at the time of the incident.

The CCTV camera installed in the cabin was positioned in such a way that the licence plates of the Bolero could not be caught.

“A case has been registered under Section 302 against an unknown person. We know that it is a local person,” said Rajiv Yadav,SHO of Manesar police.
