Ex-UP minister surrenders in rape case, gets bail

A Special Court in Etah on Thursday granted interim bail to former BSP minister Awadhpal Singh Yadav after he surrendered in a rape case that was lodged in October.

Special Judge Chandra Bhan Singh fixed January 7 as the next date for hearing.

District Government Counsel Rajendra Sharma said Yadav was released after he furnished a personal bond and two sureties of Rs 20,000 each. Awadhpal's lawyer Yadhuveer Singh Chauhan said in the morning that the former minister surrendered in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate and applied for bail.

When the court rejected it, they moved another bail application in the sessions court, which granted him interim bail on medical ground, said advocate Chauhan.

"We told the court that he is a heart patient," said Chauhan. He said that Awadhpal's brother Chandra Pratap Singh, who is also an accused in the case, had been granted interim bail on Tuesday. Chandra Pratap is a BSP MLC.

Awadhpal was a minister in the Mayawati government and had to resign after his indictment by the Lokayukta on charges of corruption.

In October, the Etah police had registered an FIR against the former minister, his brother and son Ranjit Singh for allegedly raping a woman who worked at his house as domestic aide. The police registered the case after conducting an inquiry on the direction of the State Women Commission (SWC), where the victim had filed a complaint.
