Even as Rahul Gandhi prepares to set in motion the process of organisational elections in the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) in Tamil Nadu, he has his eyes set on Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. According to party sources, Rahul, who was credited with the revival of the party’s fortunes in UP in the recent Lok Sabha election, is determined to strengthen the party’s organisational base in these two key states.
Before embarking on the organisational election exercise in UP, Rahul has divided the state into different zones — Bundelkhand, Western UP, Eastern UP and Central UP. “It is for election management purposes,” he told reporters outside Parliament on Wednesday.
Rahul said that the IYC has conducted the organisational elections “successfully” in Puducherry and it was going to be done in Tamil Nadu now. “Initially, there were some problem in Gujarat but that has been sorted out. We are getting better each time,” the AICC general secretary in charge of the IYC and the NSUI said.
In the course of these elections, Rahul has been evolving the organisational structure and has abolished district and block units and instead created panchayat, Assembly, Lok Sabha and state units of the IYC.
The new structure has been successfully created in Gujarat and Puducherry and will be the model for other states as well, said IYC president Ashok Tanwar.
“You cannot meet the expectations of people in big states, especially in a state like UP. Rahulji has, therefore, created these zones in UP for better micro-level management. As an organisation, we can thus function more smoothly and concentrate on people’s issues,” said Tanwar.
