F&CC gets allocations hiked, okays MC budget estimates

The final approval to the budget will be given by the general house when it meets later this month.

Of the estimates approved, Rs 261.05 crore will be under the plan head and Rs 376.85 crore under the non-plan head. In the financial year 2012-13, the allocation under the plan head was Rs 467.69 crore and under the non-plan head, it was Rs 345.09 crore. Of this, around Rs 236 crore were spent under the plan head, with the remaining amount being unutilised.

While Rs 247 crore had been proposed under the plan head, during the meeting of the F&CC, the members demanded that the allocations proposed for some works be increased. Following this, the budget estimates were increased.

At the meeting, the BJP councillors raised the issue about the budget being less than the previous year.

The depleting fixed deposits of the Municipal Corporation and the funds allocated last year not being spent were among the other issues raised.

Mayor Subhash Chawla said, "The budget proposed this year is more realistic than the previous years. Every year we keep enhancing the budget estimates. However, the funds cannot be spent due to the lack of big projects. The budget that has been approved by F&CC would completely be spent in the coming financial year."

For certain areas like primary health and primary education, though the departments have been transferred to the MC, the complete charge has not been given. Due to this, no money was spent on primary health while a few lakhs were used on primary education. Of the total budget, the maximum share has been earmarked for the roads and bridges department.

A total of Rs 60 crore has been approved for the department. An amount of Rs 22.50 crore has been earmarked for civic works and Rs 22 crore for solid waste management. While for most of the departments, the budgetary allocation has been reduced, for the electrification, it has witnessed an increase.
