Faithful Strokes

I am blessed to be a calligrapher and a painter. The beautiful verses from Gurbani that I calligraph are a divine blessing," says Kamaljeet Kaur, while talking about "Sadaf", an exhibition of her paintings and artefacts. The works highlight Gurbani texts and the calligraphy in Punjabi. "I took to calligraphy in Punjabi because not many people were doing it. Writing from Gurbani gives me peace and happiness and I want to spread and share it with others through my work," says the artist, who feels that the language's fonts have an amazing artistic appeal.

Her collection includes abstract paintings in varied fonts and text from the Hindu mythology including the Gayatri Mantra and Om. Also part of her collection are lamps, ceramics and silk stoles with calligraphy on them. According to Kaur, the verses that she calligraphs are answers to all our daily life questions. She highlights the often recited verses, with the Mool Mantra being one of her favourites. Kaur uses various tools and mediums to give shape to her faith, which she agrees is a work of great responsibility. Her choice of medium includes pencil, crayons and soft pastels. Mostly in earthy tones, Kaur uses various textures as backgrounds for the highlighting of the text and the play of fonts, which is beautified with different strokes. "Calligraphy connects the heart, head and hand. The art of calligraphy becomes a conversation with the self and the art of painting becomes like a form of meditation, with the words and strokes flowing effortlessly," shares Kaur.

The exhibition is on at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, till November 11.
