Fake currency racket operating in city: cops

  • In a stark revelation, the Chandigarh Police said today that the two accused arrested five days ago from the Sector-48 motor market, were involved in the circulation fake currency worth several lakhs in the city and adjoining areas over the last few months. The kingpin of the gang, Jodh Singh, a resident of Amritsar and an alleged ISI agent, has been identified by the police and was expected to be arrested soon.

    According to the police, Saurav Choudhary, resident of Tarn Tarn and Raj Kumar Gill, a resident of Ferozepur, had purchased fake currency from Jodh Singh who runs the racket in the region.

    “Jodh Singh gets fake currency from Pakistan and further supplies it to various gangs. He gives fake currency worth Rs 30,000 for Rs 20,000,” the accused told police.

    A police team is carrying out raids across Punjab to nab Jodh Singh. “Today, the party had gone to Ferozepur and raided three to four hideouts of Jodh Singh,” an officer said.

    The accused told interrogators that there are two kind of fake currency available with Jodh Singh. “The local printed fake currency, which they call non-branded, is much cheaper than what ISI sends to India. The currency from Pakistan is called branded,” the accused disclosed. The police have also recovered a stolen Audi car, worth Rs 80 lakh, from the accused. “They had stolen the car from Amritsar and had kept it in their hideout. We have recovered the car and will bring to city in a day or two.”
