‘Fake surrogacy’: Cops for DNA test on 7

The Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) has decided to conduct DNA test on seven persons in the alleged fake surrogacy case wherein twin babies were sold illegally to a doctor couple in Porbandar. The babies were born to two women, including a surrogate mother who became complainant in the case.

DCB officials said the test would be conducted to ascertain the original parents of the babies. The main accused in the case, Dr Bharat Atit, had allegedly sold the babies to the Porbandar couple claiming they were non-identical twins.

"Blood samples of the babies would be taken and matched with that of the Porbandar couple, mother of the first baby Mona Thakur, her boyfriend and her ex-husband from Rajasthan. The samples would be given to the FSL (forensic science laboratory) for a detailed analysis," said Joint Commissioner of Police A K Sharma.

The test would confirm the paternity of the first child while the police hope to get more information on the parents of the second baby.

The incident had come to light when Thakur complained to the crime branch that her boyfriend raped when she was pregnant. While probing the rape case, the DCB unearthed a bigger racket where the woman was found to have delivered a baby in the name of surrogacy.

During his questioning, Dr Atit has maintained that the babies are twins. He has not revealed the identity of the mother claiming it is against the "principles of medicine".

Narol gas leak: HC notice to govt, civic body, pollution control board

The Gujarat High Court Thursday issued notices to the state government, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Gujarat Pollution Control Board in connection with a gas leak incident of January in which three persons of a family had died in Narol area of the city.
