The custody of the minor girl from Faridkot, who was allegedly abducted on September 24 and traced to Goa, was on Wednesday handed over to her parents by court of Chief Judicial Magistrate after she expressed her willingness to stay with her parents.

The victim was allegedly abducted by Nishan Singh, who is facing 18 criminal cases, at gunpoint in public view from her house on September 24. Later the abductor and the teenager was recovered by the police from Goa. Initially, the girl had refused to go under medical examination and to her parents, following which, she was sent by the court to Nari Niketan in Jalandhar. A medical board had recently found the girl pregnant.

On October 23, the girl had first told the court that she wanted to be with her parents only to take a U-turn minutes later. The court, on Wednesday, asked her thrice if she was sure that she wanted to go with her parents. After she submitted a written statement in that regard, her custody was given to her parents.

The counsel of the girls's parents, Karamjit Singh Dhaliwal, said he had moved an application on November 16 requesting that the girl be produced before the court and her views about whom she wanted to stay be taken again. "On November 19, the court ordered that the girl be produced before the court on November 21. Today, she expressed her willingness to be with her parents," Dhaliwal said.

He added that with the parents getting the custody of the girl, all other applications — including those relating to termination of her pregnancy — stood infructuous. The CJM directed that since she was a minor, it was for her parents to take a decision on such matters, said Dhaliwal.
