Farmers from J&K, Punjab, Himachal, Haryana throng CII Agro Tech fair

Bashir Ahmed Bhat, a farmer from Jammu and Kashmir, was among a group of 30 farmers from the Valley, who was in Chandigarh on Saturday to attend the four-day agro tech expo being held at Sector 17.

The expo, which began on Saturday, drew crowds from Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pardesh and Haryana. As many as 175 exhibitors, including 45 from overseas, attended the fair.

"We grow vegetables, fruits and wheat and hope to learn a lot of new farming techniques at the expo. We wish such huge fairs are held in our state as well," said Bhat.

At the fair, major companies had put on display several farming equipment. Dilbagh Singh, who had come from Fatehgarh Sahib, said: "The new technologies that have been put on display are state-of-the art with some we don't get to see anywhere else."

"The agro tech expo is the best in the region. It is organised and we get to see the latest gadgets from both international and national exhibitors. I have come early so that I order a few machines," said Rajdeep Singh, a farmer.

Rattan Singh, from Reasi district of Jammu, said he was looking for a small tractor and the agro tech was the best place to compare the models of various companies.

"Big tractors are of no use in our hilly terrain and the choice we get at agro tech is very good," he added.

Gurmel Singh from Patiala, who had visited the last five agro tech events, said: "Every visit has been a new learning experience for me."
