‘Dharna outside Sonia,Rahul homes, jail bharo from Jan 1’

Lokpal * Anna delivers new threat, demands extended session to pass bill

Raising the stakes further in his battle against the government,Anna Hazare today threatened to launch a ‘jail bharo’ agitation from January 1 — to go along with his planned indefinite fast from December 27 — if his demands on the Lokpal bill were not met.

Hazare said he would sit on a dharna outside the homes of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and court arrest.

Team Anna is demanding the enactment of a strong anti-corruption law in the current session of parliament.

“From New Year’s Day we will launch a Jail Bharo Andolan. We will sit in front of the residence of every MP who opposes the Lokpal bill in parliament, and ask the police to put us in jail,” Hazare told reporters after a daylong meeting with his team.

“I will personally stage a dharna outside the houses of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi,” he added.

Hazare repeated his demand that parliament’s winter session be extended beyond its scheduled closing on December 22 in case there was not enough time to debate and pass the bill. “What is the problem? The government must extend the session to ensure that the bill is passed,” he said.

Hazare’s close aide Arvind Kejriwal said it was good the government was pursuing the matter seriously; however it wouldn’t do to merely go through the motions. “While we are happy that the process is on,what is more important is the outcome. We will base our future course of action only on the outcome of this process,” he told The Indian Express.

Team Anna discussed strategy all day,but is yet to finalise whether the activist would fast in Delhi or Mumbai. Hazare repeated that the decision would depend on the weather in Delhi.

He did also mention, however, that December 27 could become “Kritagyata (gratitude) Diwas” if the Lokpal bill was passed before that. “We will invite a major government functionary and offer him a rose,” Hazare said.
