Fashion’s Loss

Fashion industry's loss, it seems, has been a gain for the legal profession. Or, so would our Law Minister Ashwani Kumar have us believe. At a recent function in the capital, Kumar was regaling a group of guests with anecdotes from his life as a law student at Cambridge. Kumar talked about a short trip to Paris during those days, wherein he found himself with a group of people discussing fashion. After his own take on fashion, he claimed to have been approached by a lady to whom he had not been introduced till then. The lady, who turned out to be a top-ranking executive of one of the biggest global fashion houses, apparently was so impressed with Kumar's perceptible sense of fashion that she offered him a job in her company then and there. But Kumar — he told his listeners — did not show any interest and returned to Cambridge to complete his law education.

RACE TO BAN

WHILE Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam awaits a court verdict on its alleged portrayal of the Muslim community, another film seems to have run afoul of Muslim religious leaders. Jamiat-Ulama-Hind general secretary Mahmood Madani has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that the posters of Race 2 be taken off because some of them, displayed in Kolkata, carry Quranic verses.

BACK TO TRADITION

ONE of the things that former President Pratibha Patil introduced to the ceremonies around the Republic Day celebrations was a glass enclosure at the beating retreat function. The reason for the glass enclosure was that Patil used to feel too cold sitting in the open. The enclosure was even fitted with a heater. Most regulars at the function had been taken aback by the structure. However, in his very first appearance as the President at the ceremony, Pranab Mukherjee has gone back to tradition. The structure was not present this time around, much to the relief of viewers and organisers.
