FDA seizes spurious mawa worth over Rs 30 lakh

90 per cent of the stock has been confiscated from major sweet distributors in city

The state Food and Drugs Administation (FDA) has seized over 15,000 kg of adulterated mawa worth over Rs 30 lakh in Mumbai in the past month. Almost 90 per cent of the stock has been confiscated from major sweet distributors.

The FDA food inspection drive started in August and the target was milk adulteration. The focus has now shifted to sweets and sweetmeats where there is scope for adulteration of mawa, ghee and other milk products.

"Our food inspectors have been conducting checks and raids and collecting samples. Ninety per cent of samples analysed have been found to be adulterated. Spurious samples will be slightly discoloured or may have a different taste," said joint commissioner, FDA (food), Suresh Deshmukh.

With its thin staff, FDA has been trying to create awareness against food adulteration among the masses. Deshmukh said food businessmen were being sensitised to hygienic preparations, storage and handling conditions.

"While FDA will continue inspections and raids, it is important the public be aware of possibilities of adulteration. They should not buy cheap sweets from small shops. It is important to be cautious of strange food tastes and colours. In case of doubt, people should call our helpline immediately," he said.
