In a bizarre incident,a woman and her three daughters were kept locked in their house for years on end with little food and electricity by a man,who feared his daughters would be raped once out on the street.
Pale and emaciated, the hapless women were rescued by the city police with the help of an NGO from their residence at Naigaon in neighbouring Thane district.
Francis Gomes, the patriarch, has refuted the allegations levelled against him by his wife – Theresa and three daughters. His statement is being recorded, police said.
Theresa and her daughters – aged 27,22 and 21 were rescued from their second floor flat in Neelambha Cooperative Housing Society at Naigaon on Tuesday by the police and members of the NGO,Anand Rehabilitation Centre.
Theresa,in her complaint against her 60-year-old husband Gomes, has alleged that he would lock them inside the house when he left for work in the morning and would return only in the night.
“Theresa has said that Gomes also switched off the power supply before leaving and he would turn it on only after he returned,” Inspector Ashok Pawar said.
According to the complaint,Gomes was extremely possessive of his daughters and had forcibly confined them to the house fearing they would be raped by strangers.
