Former SAD general secretary from Amritsar (West) Ranjit Singh Rana, who on Wednesday had killed ASI Ravinderpal Singh when the officer asked him to stop harassing his daughter, has claimed that it was not him but Gurbir Singh Bira — his accomplice, who has also been arrested — who used to tease the girl.
Tarn Taran SSP Kamaljit Singh Dhillon on Friday said that during preliminary questioning, Rana has claimed that Gurbir Singh Bira — reportedly the son of a head constable posted at a Amritsar police station — used to tease the daughter of the slain ASI.
According to sources, after committing the crime, Rana had called up SAD organising secretary in Amritsar (Urban), Baljinder Singh Dhillon — who was among those who had recommended Rana's name for the post of SAD general secretary — requesting him to save him and his family from the police. Rana had reportedly switched off his phone and called Dhillon from a different number.
When asked about it, Dhillon initially claimed that it was due to him that Rana was finally caught, as he gave the police the number from which Rana had called.
However, when asked he given Rana's number to which police officer, Dhillon said: "In fact, a police party had come to me saying that they had information that Rana had called me up. The credit goes to the police". He added that Rana had called up from a new number.
Meanwhile, when told that Rana and his associates reportedly fired 100 shots when he was made the party general secretary, SAD Amritsar (Urban) president Upkar Singh Sandhu said: "Why is this being said now? Had this been the case, opposition leaders would have made an issue of it then only."
