Students at the Bharatratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Student’s Hostel, which is in a dilapidated state and where living conditions are poor, are happy that cleaning and renovation of the hostel has begun as Rs 20 lakh has been granted from the Mayor’s Development Fund.

Pune Newsline had on June 14 carried a report on the dingy rooms, dirty toilets and poor living conditions at the hostel prompting the mayor to announce an immediate grant of Rs 20 lakh. The renovation work is on. New doors are being put in place of the old, broken ones. The entrance, where dirty water stagnated, has been cleaned up. New dustbins have been placed. Speaking on work being carried out at the hostel,Rakesh Vitkar, the hostel rector, said,“PMC authorities started work as soon as the mayor announced the funds. New doors have been put up now and in the next two days, most of the work should be complete.”

Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal said,“The funds have been released. The temporary work, that of cleaning up the place, installing dustbins, replacing doors have been done. Other major works should also be completed in the coming few weeks.”

The students are happy with the cleaning up of the place, but are worried about a notice put up at the hostel. “This afternoon,we were informed that we will have to vacate the hostel rooms for the construction work being carried out. Our colleges have reopened and we cannot vacate our rooms,” said a student who did not wish to be named.

On asking about the notice,Vitkar said,“If they have to vacate the hostel, students will have to face a lot of problems since they come from rural areas and have no other place to go to and their colleges have reopened. We will try to talk to the deputy commissioner,Anil Gaikwad, tomorrow and request him to let the students stay.”
