Finally, cops recover correct car

Three days after a constable of the UT Police was assaulted by a group of three youths after they outraged the modesty of his wife, who is also a constable, the police have recovered the correct car used in the crime. While the vehicle was recovered from the owner on Sunday morning, the three accused who were in the car at the scene of the crime are still absconding. They were said to have tampered with the registration number of the car.

SHO Anokh Singh said, "When the first was discovered to be an incorrect car, we got a list of all the cars with a similar registration number from the agency. The occupants had apparently changed the first digit of the car which we now have in our possession."

The car used by the accused is registered in the name of a private Chandigarh-based firm. One of the owners of the car, who is a city-based lawyer, said, "The police had come to verify my car yesterday but at that time I refused that anything of the sort had happened. I had not known about this issue. Then through the media I came to know about the incident, and I went to the police station to give them the car as a part of the investigation."

As per the owner, an advocate of the Chandigarh District Court, Amarbir, had borrowed his car at a wedding on February 7. "Amarbir had taken my car when we were together at a friend's place. I do not know the other two who were accompanying Amarbir," said the owner.

Amarbir, a resident of Sector 19, was accompanied by Kamala, a resident of Sector 9, and Gobind. The police raided the residence of all the three accused in the morning but they were absconding. The victim constable, Sukhraj Singh, was made to identify the car and the owner. He identified the car but not the owner.
