Sushanta Ghosh, the powerful CPM MLA from Garbeta, finally landed in the jail on Saturday. Ghosh was on Saturday remanded to jail custody by the CJM court,Midnapore after his bail plea was rejected. The court directed the police to produce Ghosh in the court on August 30. Earlier,Ghosh spent almost 18 days in police custody and was constantly grilled by the CID investigating teams for his alleged link with the recovery of seven human skeletons near his house and for other charges. After the judge remanded him to jail custody,a shocked Ghosh pleaded to the court to grant him the permission to be sent to Midnapore Central Jail. If I need to stay in a jail,I would like to stay in Midnapore jail, though I know there is high risk of Maoists attacking me to take revenge. This is my home district and I do not want to stay in any jail in Kolkata, said Ghosh. However, late evening there was a fresh move by the police and jail authorities to shift Ghosh to either Presidency or Alipore central jails on grounds of security. When asked,a senior CID official said,The interrogation in skeleton case his over. Now Garbeta police can later take him in their custody as there is another case against him with them. Incidentally, during interrogation,Ghosh told the CID team that the money recovered from his flat in Kolkata on Friday belonged to the party fund. Sushanta Ghosh, often addressed as the King of Jungle Mahal, resisted the winds of change sweeping across the state and won the Garbeta assembly seat with 86,047 votes. Ghosh, the architect of the recapture of Lalgarh from Maoists, practically ruled the region with a network of cadres that allegedly included a private army. He held on to his constituency despite sustained efforts by Maoists to penetrate his base. Ghosh won the Garbeta seat for the first time in a 1985 by-election. Since then,he has emerged victorious in seven Assembly elections. In the 2009 Parliamentary election, when the Trinamool Congress upstaged the Left across Bengal,it could not make a dent in Garbeta Assembly,or anywhere in West Midnapore. The militant approach had once made Ghosh unpopular at Alimuddin Street. After the Netai massacre, the CBI had named three of Ghoshs close associates in the chargesheet.
