  • Even as the finance minister recently stepped in to issue an advisory to curtail unnecessary expenditure, it is learnt that the finance ministry has already used up more than 80 per cent or four-fifth of its funds allocated for foreign travel in the first two quarters itself.

According to senior government officials, Rs 3.3 crore was allocated to the ministry in the Budget this year for foreign travel with an advisory that additional funds should not be requested again in the supplementary demand for grants.

“The ministry has already used up most of its funds under the foreign trips head for the fiscal. It remains to be seen how funds will be raised for future trips for the remaining two quarters,” a senior government official told The Indian Express.

Funds allocated under this head are used for all foreign trips sanctioned in the ministry up to the level of minister of state. The funding for travel of finance minister himself is not included under this head, the official said.

Pranabda be austere in your political movesBy: Babe | 24-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Its high time he stopped being a politician only. Its time he started behaving like a finance minister. You are setting a very bad precedent by forcing these irrelevant, half baked and knee jerking so-called austere measures on India. Stop this show. Have you revoked all tenders of mineral water for meetings and seminars.....Have the govt pool vehicles stopped drawing petrol... Have you grounded some relevant % of vehicles.. allotted to your colleagues and babus.... have you initiated car-pooling for them...Give up the Lutyens bungalows.. sell them for Govt benefit.. as your aviation minister proposed foolishly for Air India building... hey.. why not sell Rashtrapati Bhavan... its only for the president.... a 3 bedroom flat may be sufficient...Stop fooling... we expect better from Congress President, PM and You than all thisIf you were so sincere. then these measures should have been included in your budget and its impact on fiscal deficit should have been adequately highlighted.
