A week after a 35-year-old farmer allegedly jumped before a train in a Jhansi village,a case of abetment to suicide was registered against a local money lender on Wednesday.

Jairam Singh,a resident of Baral village under Chirgaon police station area of the district, had mortgaged his two bighas of land to a local money lender against a loan of Rs 65,000. According to the complaint filed with the police, the money lender,Durga Prasad, had not returned the land to Jairam despite him returning the principal amount of money with interest.

Superintendent of Police Jhansi (Rural),Dinesh Chandra, said,“Jairam had left behind a suicide note blaming the money lender for forcing him to take the extreme step.” The money lender’s father has also been named in the FIR.

Police said Jairam needed money for the medical treatment of his brother,Meharban Singh, who had suffered burn injuries. Over a period of time,Jairam managed to repay the loan amount and was asking Prasad to return his land. When he refused,Singh even called up the panchayat, but to no avail.

“The last time he went to the money lenders to take up the issue,Jairam was reportedly humiliated and thrown out of the house,” said a local police officer.
