  • The General Court Martial, trying for the first time a woman officer of the Indian Army, Maj Dimple Singla, directed the prosecution to authenticate the convening order of the GCM.

The defence raised the objection to the jurisdiction of the GCM to try Maj Singla, formerly an officer in the Judge Advocate General branch Western Command Headquarters, on the grounds that convening order had been tampered with. The GCM trying Maj Dimple for professional impropriety had for the first time assembled on April 2, and was adjourned due to non-availability of Judge Advocate.

General Officer-in-Commanding 2 Corps Lt Gen V K Singh had assembled the GCM to try Maj Singla at Headquarters of an Engineer Brigade at Zirakpur, near here, by order dated March 29, 2007.

Defence counsel Col (retd) S K Aggarwal also requested the court to direct the prosecution to supply the record of the hearing the charges held under Army Rule 22 because the defence will submit a petition challenging the jurisdiction due to non-compliance of mandatory statutory provisions.

The prosecution requested the court to adjourn the court till Friday to enable them to check up the factual position from 2 Corp HQ Ambala before submitting the suitable reply, which the court granted.
