After recording zero cases of polio over the last two years, Karnataka has reported its first polio case of 2007. Health department officials have, however, been quick to point out that the case involves a young child among a group of migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh, a high polio prevalence state.
Karnataka Health Secretary Usha Ganesh on Tuesday announced the detection of a polio case in Bangalore but added that the case involved a 26-month-old child from a settlement of migrant workers from UP’s Faizabad region.
“Since 2004, there have been no local cases of polio reported from Karnataka as the state has been intensely carrying out the pulse polio programme,” the health secretary said.
With the construction industry booming in Bangalore, hundreds of migrant workers are moving to the city from across the country and settling down in temporary shelters making it difficult to monitor cases, Ganesh said.
Out of a total of 429 cases detected in the country till November 30, UP and Bihar recorded the highest cases at 290 and 113, respectively. Eleven other states recorded single digit cases. Karnataka recorded 71 cases in 1998 but subsequently saw cases drop to zero in 2001 and 2002. However, 36 cases were recorded in 2003 before the numbers dropped again to zero in 2005 and 2006.
