A large number of fish have died recently in the Rajasthan canal,the 560-km long canal which goes to Rajasthan. The dead fish were taken out from the canal along Faridkot on Thursday. Contaminated water is being stated as the main reason for the mass death. Faridkot DC Ravi Bhagat said,The water that comes from Sutlej seems to be polluted. We have asked the canal department to find the source of contamination. Sources revealed that water from industrial town Ludhiana and Jalandhar is let out to Sutlej,which is further released into the canal. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had earlier confirmed of receiving a complaint from his Rajasthan counterpart regarding pollution in Rajasthan feeder. Sirhind canal and Rajasthan feeder emerge from Sutlej river. Canal department officials stated that on Wednesday,18 cusec water was released into the Rajasthan canal. In the past,tests conducted by the Bhabha Atomic Centre had shown that industrial pollutants had been making the water in the canal poisonous. Badal had announced a project of river cleaning in 2011 in order to make the water pollution-free.
