Fishing ban starts today

The ban, which is expected to affect a huge number of people adversely, has been necessitated by a very important reason - continuity.

The annual 45-day ban on fishing by deep sea trawlers in coastal areas commenced in the district today.

Under the ban, imposed under the the Tamilnadu Deepsea Fishing Regulation Act,2001,mechanised trawlers with a capacity of 10 HP and above were not allowed to fish from April 15 to May 29,the breeding season of fish, officials said.

Hundreds of mechanised trawlers in the district did not put out to the sea in view of the ban.

During April-May,several species of fish go deep into the sea for breeding. And deep-sea fishing by trawlers disturbs them. The government imposes the ban to prevent fish population from dwindling.
