Fitting finale

As the great performers at the 57th Sawai Gandharv Music Festival left thousands spellbound,their melodies will rule the hearts of music lovers for long.

As the great performers at the 57th Sawai Gandharv Music Festival left thousands spellbound,their melodies will rule the hearts of music lovers for long.

The fourth and the last day was the apex point,when Girija Devi ,from Banaras Gharana mesmerized the audience by singing Thumari ,Holi ,Chaiti,Jhula,Dadra and Kajri,and the audience was astounded when Pt Bhimsen Joshi came to see her performing. Her Piya more aas lagi more mana and Rang dalungi nandan lalan pe received a thunderous applause from the audience. “ I am very greatful that Panditji came to see my performance despite of ill health,” she said. The other performaces by Ustad Shahid Parvez, sitar artiste and Pt Raja Kale disciple of Pt Jitendra Abhisheki won the audiences heart.

The last session had renowned artiste Mallika Sarabhai ,Pt Satysheel Deshpande ,Pt Ram Narayan and his grandson Harsh Narayan ,practitioners of Sarangi along with Ustad Raja Miyan and Prabha Atre.

Rewind play

Day 1: Conventionally beginning with the Shehnai,Pramod Gaikwad,grandson of renowned Shehnai Samrat Pt Shankarraoji Gaikwad and son of Surmani Pt Prabhashankar Gaikwad performed at the outset. Day one also had Pt Nagnath Wodeyar ,Devaki Pandit,Tarun Bhattacharya and the musical maestro Pt Jasraj’s performances. A tribute to the Pt Jitendra Abhisheki,with the launch of Majhe Jivan Gan’s translation in English,by Mohan Darekar was also held.

Day 2: Rajendra Kandalgaonkar started the concert with the Multani Raga and ended with the abhanga,Pandharu nivasa sakha Pandurang. Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia,bansuri exponent,enthralled the audiences with the ragas. marubihag ,durga and so on. The later part had Shrinivas Joshi along with well known vocalist Malini Rajurkar who allured the audience with their spellbound performances. Antarang that had interviews throughout with the musicians saw Pt Satyasheel Deshpande discuss the intricacies of music with vocalist Padma Talwalkar along with presentations on Gangubai Hangal’s Musical Journey presented by Shivanad Patil,Yogana Patil and Arunoday Bhatkar.

Day 3: Pt Ulhas Kashakar received a rave review from the audiences,while Chandrashekhar Waze,disciple of Pt Firoz Dastur ,performed the raga marva and brought the liveliness in the environment. Biswajit Roy Chowdhury’s Sarod wadan beguiled the audience and Sanhita Nandi ,exponent of Hindustani Classical vocal received praise from the audience.
