The Madhya Pradesh Police arrested five members of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), including two persons wanted in the Ahmedabad serial blasts, from Indore late on Tuesday.
The two have been identified as Mohammed Shafiq alias Dadabhai, Yunus alias Umar, Shaikh Sajid, Firoz and Ashraf. They were taken into custody from a rented place in Khajrana, a sensitive locality in the state’s commercial capital.
A joint team of MP ATS and Indore police raided the place around 6 pm and made the arrests. The five were living under different names and none were employed.
The police recovered objectionable literature, a recorder and CDs from the spot, but no weapon or explosives. The police, however, did not elaborate on the seized materials.
ATS chief Pawan Shrivastava told Newsline: “They could not offer any resistance because we outnumbered them.”
Shafiq and Yunus belong to Ujjain and were wanted in connection with the July 26, 2008 Ahmedabad blasts. Sajid, who belongs to Khandwa, was wanted in connection with a local case. Firoz and Ashraf belong to Khandwa.
The five had been staying in the rented place for a long time and were under observation for the last three months. They were produced before the chief judicial magistrate on Wednesday, who remanded them in police custody for 10 days.
