Despite a number of proposals by the Municipal Corporation to reduce the stench and maintain the drain in Sector 47 near 3 Base Repair Depot, the problem continues to persist.

In 2004, the civic body had proposed setting up a 15 MGD capacity sewage treatment plant in the area to treat garbage from the sectors in the third phase of the city.

It was stated that the project would be completed in two years with grants from the Centre. Though five years have passed, there are no signs of the plant. The other plant proposed for Diggian was, however, set up.

Area councillor Jatinder Bhatia said, “The proposal was brought to the House during its previous term. There has been no progress since then. We have no idea whether the project is still being pursued or has been dropped.”

Bhatia had also raised the issue during the House Meet held last month and demanded that the status of the project be brought to the floor of the House as part of the report being prepared on pending works for the last five years.

He said residents were forced to live in unhygienic conditions prevailing due to the open drain.

Another proposal that has not see the light of day is the beautification plan of the area. It had been mooted that a plantation drive would be carried out but this too was never executed.
