Flamboyant players like Pietersen are insecure: Vaughan

Former skipper believes key to ending KP's ODI drought is to play to his ego.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has asked to play to Kevin Pietersen’s ego in order to bring him back into form in the ODIs.

Pietersen may have rediscovered his magic touch in the Test arena, but Monday’s thrashing in Delhi sees him fast approaching three years without a limited overs century.

The right-hander averages 23.46 from his last 34 matches.

“Kevin is an interesting one. For a player like him to have not scored a century in three years is staggering. There has to be something wrong in his game that is different from when he started his international career,” Vaughan said.

“When he first came into the side he didn’t have anything negative – he only knew positivity. Now he’s experienced negativity and seen his place has been questioned.

Speaking at the NatWest Outstanding Service to Cricket Awards,Vaughan said how he got Pietersen firing.

He said: “If he could get back to the level that he can,it would be a massive plus for the team – because the youngsters can watch him and learn. Pietersen needs loving. These flamboyant,X Factor players are insecure.”

“They like the limelight and want people to see them all the time. Now and again you have to give him a volley, but more often than not he needs telling how good he is and how he can do things no England player can do.

“There are other good players around now,but the skill in management is still making Kevin Pietersen believe he is No1,” Vaughan added.
