Flash floods destroy twin villages near Srinagar

After Leh,a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Khonmoh and Balhama areas on the outskirts of Srinagar. Flash floods swept the twin villages and caused widespread damage. However no casualties were reported.

The cloudburst occurred near Khonmoh,13 kms from Srinagar at on Tuesday night,causing flash floods because of which water gushed in to the adjoining villages including Balhama. According to official figures,285 structures were damaged at Khonmoh and 33 at Balhama. Authorities also said that the cloudburst damaged paddy and saffron fields.

“More than 3300 kanals of paddy,orchards,and saffron fields have been washed away following the cloudburst,” said Aamir Ali,in charge Disaster Management Cell.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir,Naseema Lankar has ordered relief and rehabilitation of the affected families as per Calamity Relief Rules.

“As per the initial assessment of damage,about 330 families have been affected in Khonmoh and Balhama,” said Aamir Ali.

The district administration assisted by the army has started relief work in the area.
