District Magistrate S P Srow stated that Flood Relief Centres had been set up to meet any eventuality occurring due to a flood-like situation here today.
Last year, there was a flood-like situation in the catchment areas of rivulets passing through Ambala district during the rainy season.
The administration, under the Haryana Requisition and Acquisition of Immoveable Property Act 1973,will ensure the safety of people residing in and around those rivers/channels which not only obstruct the natural course of water but also pose a threat to human life and property.
Residents from low lying areas which are flooded every year in Ambala City would also be ensured safety and shelter.
Under the above Act,Srow ordered requisition of Prem Mandir premises in Nadi Mohalla,Ambala City and to take possession of the building till October 2011.
The acquisition of this building has been necessitated to relocate or shift people residing in flood affected areas to safer places till the first week of October.
The order further said that people who had constructed their houses on the bed or a channel of rivulets should vacate the houses in the wake of rains in the district.
The administration had issued notices to people, warning them of demolition of constructions made in violation of the rules.
The seasonal rivulets Tangri,Markanda,Begna and others are flooded when rainwater from Shialik mountains starts flowing in these rivers.
These then flood the catchment areas in the district. Scores of villages are affected by floods and the standing crops perish every year.
However, the administration has claimed that the embankments of these rivers had been strengthened to meet the fury of the flooded rivulets.
