For all those who think that the armed forces have lost their sheen, the pavillion set up by the Indian Air Force at the Chandigarh Carnival has an answer. The stall drew the maximum crowd, belying the notion that youngsters do not consider the forces as a favourable job option. This is the first time that the IAF has set up a stall at the carnival.
IAF officials feel that the exercise will help spread awareness about the armed forces and also motivate people to join them. "The lure of the uniform is still very much there. Every year so many candidates apply for the Service Selection Board," said Wing Commander Pankaj Chopra.
“At the stall, my colleagues are giving aspirants an insight into the life in the armed forces, its pros and cons. A lot of youngsters have enquired about the IAF throughout the day,” he added.
“Most of the boys who have shown interest in the IAF are undergraduates. The forces continue to be a preferred career for the quality of life and the job security it offers,” said Flight Lieutenant Rohan.
Kunal, a college student, said: “I have always admired the officers in uniform. I also plan to join the IAF as it is the best way to serve the nation.”
IAF souvenirs such as posters were also a crowd-puller as people wanted to see the different aircraft. “If even looking at a poster can make someone feel empathetic for those who risk their lives for the country, I think our job is done,” said Chopra.
