Food items sold at PAU pose health hazard

Soya food bars were set up at Punjab Agricultural University by the previous Vice- Chancellor Dr Kirpal Singh Aulkah with an aim to provide healthy food items for the students.

Soya food bars were set up at Punjab Agricultural University by the previous Vice- Chancellor Dr Kirpal Singh Aulkah with an aim to provide healthy food items for the students. Of late, soya milk, soya paneer and other items made of soya milk have become very popular on campus. But take a closer look and one can easily see that these products that were supposed to be for good health of the students could well prove to be a major health hazard.

Packets of soya paneer and soya milk being sold from one of the soya products bars situated near the College of Agriculture Engineering PAU show that there is no manufacturing date printed on the packet. Worse is that the packet carries a warning saying best used between two days of packing but no one knows when this packet was packed. The boy manning the bar says he is just an employee here and does not know anything more. When asked to give the name and the address of the owner,he refuses to do so.

When contacted,Dr Gurkirpal Singh,Estate Office,PAU,who is in charge of allocating eating spots on campus says,“We have a committee that looks into the quality of products sold on campus. This committee also takes care of prices of the products. I will ask this committee to take stock of not only this bar but also of all other eatables being sold on campus.”
