Menwhopauses second album takes it Easy
They call their music post-office rock. The name of their band refers to the most hormonal stage in womanhood. Delhi-based five-member band,Menwhopause, likes to defy convention. Consisting of Sarabjit Singh Chadha on vocals, guitarist Anup Kutty,Inderpreet Singh on the acoustic guitar, bassist Randeep Singh and drummer Rahul Chatterjee, the band is all set to release their second album Easy (EMI,Rs 195) on January 26. One of the few bands to perform internationally,Menwhopause is known for their retro blues music.
Founding members Chadha,Inderpreet and Kutty met through common friends in 1998 and would make music together informally. Friends, who liked their music, pushed them into their first concert at Dilli Haat in 2001,where they found their fourth member Randeep Singh,an instant fan. Most bands would be playing covers, says Randeep. What drew me to them was that they were making original music, and it was good music.
The band officially started playing together in 2001,with their then drummer Rahul Chatterjee, but is now joined by Paul Schnitzer,a sound engineer and drummer from France. None of the band members has had any formal training in music, but Inderpreet says that they believe that music is an expression, the tools can be learnt later. As a band,it is not relevant if anyone has formal training or not,the point is to make something new. All of the band members,in their early thirties, have day jobs, and meet after work to jam. Our music is our second job its not a hobby, says Randeep, who grew up listening to Radiohead.
Easy took almost four years to come to the shelves. Recorded in the hills in 2006, says Randeep,we kept working on making the music better. The album was rerecorded last year in Delhi. It contains 14 tracks,of which, the band says Downtown was the most challenging, and shaped the tone for the rest of the CD.
I wish we could release an audio tape, adds Inderpreet. In this digital age,the act of buying music, with good artwork and lyrics in the cover, all this gets lost. Easy comes with a booklet which contains lyrics, original artwork and information about the band. A smaller launch will be taking place on January 27 at Hard Rock Café,Saket.
