For feedback on cops, state launches web portal

The state government on Wednesday launched a 24X7 citizen portal and a toll free phone number to seek suggestions and feedback from people, who claim to have been denied fair treatment by the police.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal after launching the portal said he had initiated the system to remove the impression that complaints at the lower levels are not attended to and some citizens are not satisfied with the investigation by the police. "This system will not replace police stations, as the first point of filing a complaint will be the police station. Complainants, who feel they are not getting justice can approach us through email or the 24-hour toll-free number. The complainant will get a reply within 21 days and in urgent cases, instantly," Sukhbir said.

ADGP (Law and Order) and his team will monitor the complaints at www.punjabpolice.gov.in or on the toll free phone number 1800-180-2082.

Announcing the launch of the first-ever Rapid Rural Response System with a three-digit toll-free number, Sukhbir said that by January, 2013, Punjab will get 700 motorcycles for rural policing and 245 for urban policing.

PCR motorbikes will also reach a spot within 20 minutes of receiving any information, on the pattern of the 108 Ambulances.

Sukhbir added a central control room was being set up for the Rapid Rural Response System and he will personally monitor its functioning.

Concerned over accidents due to over speeding, Sukhbir said he had ordered the construction of speed radars at every important road to check over speeding. Asked about the current law and order situation in the state, Sukhbir accused the Congress of politicising minor issues.

"Law and order situation in the state is better than any state in the country. In the last five years, we have made record seizures of RDX and explosives, and made pre-emptive arrests of hardcore ultras preventing many tragedies. Those who were seeking my resignation have been rejected by the public. Before asking me to resign, the resignation of the Prime Minister should be sought, under whose tenure, India suffered major bomb blasts, including the attack on Mumbai," he added.
