For Gambhir,a chance to silence critics

With doubts expressed over the availability of injured opener Virender Sehwag,Gautam Gambhir was the focus of attention at the nets on match eve. Coach Gary Kirsten spent at a long time with the batsman advising him to play on his toes while on the backfoot, and also stroke straight while playing as close to the body as possible.

Gambhir’s scoring area happens to be square on the off-side but his tendency to ignore other areas to accumulate runs gets exploited by rival bowlers.

High pressure games, bring the best out of Gambhir as six of his nine ODI centuries have helped India record wins. India’s two most memorable victories in recent times — the World T20 and the CB series in Australia — have seen Gambhir scoring heavily.

Though,it is said that Gambhir is under pressure from his Delhi mate Virat Kohli for the No.3 spot but statistics don’t back the argument. Gambhir with a tally 219 in this World Cup has five more runs than Kohli. But what he doesn’t have, unlike Kohli,is a century to his name in this tournament — the only top-order batsman without the landmark.
