To demand the creation of a Marathi Bhasha Bhavan on the campus of the University of Pune.

To demand the creation of a Marathi Bhasha Bhavan on the campus of the University of Pune (UoP),representatives of the Maharashtra Navnirman Yuva Sena (MNVS),along with students of the department, staged a protest by holding book reading sessions in front of the department. According to them such specialised facilities are present for various other language departments.

MNVS Pune region president Prashant Kanjolia said,”Such facilities are needed, especially for students pursuing courses in M.Phil and other higher studies of the language. The Bhavan,if created, can house documents and historical records needed to trace the history, origin and other related studies in the area.”

At present, the Marathi department, along with five other languages – Hindi,English,Sanskrit,Pali and psychology – are housed in the Kher Wagmay Bhavan. Students of the Marathi department allege the present library is small and lacks facilities.

Manohar Jadhav, head of the department,(Marathi),UoP,said,”At the time of the establishment of the varsity in Pune, which is known as the cultural capital of the state, the vision was to promote the literary richness of Marathi. The demand has been long-pending. Earlier the then Vice-Chancellor Arun Nigvekar had agreed to the creation of such a structure after such a proposal was forwarded by the seniors in the department in 2000-01. But then he went on to become UGC chairman and moved to New Delhi. We are also pursuing the matter at the department level.”

Jadhav said a multi-storeyed building with facilities such as an auditorium, conference room, linguistic laboratory, library, gallery, museum and so on is among the infrastructural demands by the department. However, seniors in the department said they do not want to be associated with any political groups and that the matter would be pursued in accordance with the norms of the varsity.
