For the residents of Senior Citizens Home, Sarabha Nagar, it was a day out amid pictures and photographs. To mark the Gandhi Jayanti and the day for the elderly, the art gallery, Artmosphere, had invited the resident of this old age home for a cup of tea and also for spending some time at the gallery. At present, this gallery has on display a photography exhibition by Jaswant Zafar.

Sixty two-year old Surjeet Singh, while commenting on the pictures, said, “They are so beautiful. They remind me of my younger days when we would visit old places and parks.” To this, 82-year old Omkar Nath added, “Such outings for us and that on special invitation are always a pleasure. We never knew that Ludhiana has an art gallery. It is nice to see that this town which is only about money money and more money has a space where someone can display his finer feeling and people like us can come and enjoy such moments.”

For 83-year-old Bal Kishan Gupta, “The idea of art gallery is really great. I belong to Amritsar and we have art galleries there. It is nice to see that Ludhiana too has one such art space. It is a great feeling to sit here among so many beautiful pictures.”

As the others enjoyed the beauty of the pictures, Kewal Krishan, another resident of this home, remarked, “These pictures have brought back old memories. These pictures have been taken in places like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Mahableshwar and other such places. I have visited all these place and even the spots where these pictures have been taken.” Krishan added, “A walk through the exhibition has brought back all those old memories once again.”

And do they miss home?

“ Not at all,” says Omkar Nath, ‘For at our old age home, we are very well looked after and above all enjoy a lot of freedom.”

Nath explains, “At the end of the day, it all about one’s own freedom and space. Children want their space and we oldies want ours. And we all should learn to do that. We have enjoyed our lives and now it is the turn of children to do the same. Why should we become obstacles for them. At the same time, I want my freedom.”

“Which daughter-in-law will serve me bed tea at five in the morning be it be summer or winter?,” he asks and then adds: “I get it here and I enjoy every moment I spend. My only advise to the youngsters is make some good saving which you can spend later in life.”
