The Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) — the only technical university in the state — has decided to introduce a course in design and manufacturing with an aim to enhance the employability of the students.
A proposal in this regard will be tabled in the next meeting of the university’s academic council for approval.
The “Masters in Design and Manufacturing” course, likely to be introduced from the next academic session, will be projected as the university’s “brand course”.
Authorities believe that the new course will be unique both in employability and applications and they plan to hire best faculty.
With the UPTU lacking teachers who can teach the new course, it has decided to invite faculties of different IITs like Delhi, Roorkee, Kanpur, to conduct the classes.
“As there is no such specialised course in designing and manufacturing in any technical institute in the state at present,” said UPTU Vice-Chancellor Kripa Shanker.
“Learning design and manufacturing as separate streams at BTech-level is not sufficient. So specialisation in this filed has become a must to secure a good job,” he added.
Those who have graduated in mechanical and electrical engineering will be eligible to apply for this course. The syllabus, which has been prepared by faculties of different IITs, also includes Information Technology.
Shanker said over a dozen technical colleges across the state have shown interest in starting this course in their institutes, but the university has made it clear that seats will be allocated according to the capacity and infrastructure of the institutes.
