Science students of a school in Tinsukia in Assam getting tips on choosing a career from a professor in Pune was an idea that a visually impaired teacher from Pune came up with. The idea of Satish Navale,a teacher at Vivekanand Kendra Vidyalaya in Assam,clicked on Tuesday when around 50 science students of class XI of the school had an interactive session with professor Professor P B Vidyasagar,head,department of Physics,University of Pune,for around 30 minutes. The interactive session was made possible through mobile phone,which Navale had rigged up to a set of speakers for the whole class to hear. "I amplified the sound with the help of computer speakers. Around 50 students could hear him. Students asked many questions," said Navale over phone from Tinsukia. He said as Prof. Vidyasagar was known to him,he had requested him to share his experience as a science teacher and also as a writer of science fiction. "He weaved his interaction with the students beautifully,sharing experiences as well as giving career guidelines," said Navale. "In a town like Tinsukia,students often do not get enough opportunities to interact with people for career guidance. Thus,the idea was born," said Navale. Susmit Borua,a student,said,"It was a first -of-its-kind experience for us. Video conferencing is a distant dream. Using this simple technology,we could at least experience an audio conference,thanks to Navale sir." Prof. Vidyasagar also said he enjoyed the experience and the response was very good. "It was an innovative initiative and such initiatives should be backed strongly," he added.
