In the backdrop of the release of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafeez Saeed in Pakistan,External Affairs Minister S M Krishna met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and is understood to have discussed the development.
The hour-long meeting was also attended by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan and Foreign Secretary Shivshanker Menon.
The situation arising out of recent attacks on Indian students in Australia is also believed to have figured in the discussions.
Krishna and Singh, who met hours after the Lahore High Court ordered Saeed’s release, are understood to have discussed the options India could exercise to ensure that Sayeed, linked to Mumbai terror attack in November last year, does not go scot free.
India is expected to mobilise the international community, particularly the US,to mount pressure on Pakistan to ensure it acts in a concrete manner against those involved in the Mumbai attack.
“India will take all possible steps in order to drive home its point,” Krishna told reporters here when asked whether New Delhi will make efforts to build international pressure on Pakistan.
India will have the opportunity to take up the issue during the visit of US Under Secretary of State William Burns here expectedly on June 10.
The US has already taken note of the involvement of Saeed and JuD,which is a front outfit of Lashker-e-Taiba terror outfit,in the Mumbai attack.
India has underlined that Saeed’s release reflects lack of seriousness by Pakistan to fight terror and bring to justice the perpetrators of 26/11 attack. During the meeting,Krishna is also believed to have updated Singh on the situation arising out of attacks on Indian students in Australia.
India has mounted diplomatic pressure on Australia to ensure that its students and other nationals are safe in that country.
