A report by the Forensic Science Laboratory in Agra has confirmed that the bullets used in the terrorist attack on the CRPF camp in Rampur of January 1,2008,were fired from two AK-47 rifles seized from Sabauddin and two Pakistanis arrested in Lucknow later. Fingerprints lifted from the spot have also matched those of the accused.

The report, which has been submitted in the Rampur court, will play an important role in the trial because none of the CRPF men could recognise the assailants. Seven CRPF men and a rickshaw puller were killed in the Lashkar-e-Toiba attack. After the attack, forensic experts had collected fingerprints from the glass door of the DIG’s control room,43 blank cartridges,47 live cartridges and seven AK-47 magazines.

Later, the police arrested six persons, including Bihar native Sabauddin, who was also involved in the attack on the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Sabauddin has since been taken to Mumbai as part of investigations into the 26/11 attacks.

Sabauddin, along with Pakistan nationals — Imran Shahzad and Mohammad Farooq — was arrested from Lucknow railway station on February 10,2008,as they were preparing to board a train to Mumbai. The police had seized two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and 18 live cartridges from them.

Source said that the fingerprints on the spot matched those of Imran Shahzad and Mohammad Farooq. Blank cartridges recovered from the spot matched with the firing pin of the AK-47 rifle recovered from Sabauddin, while three blank cartridges matched with the firing pin of the AK-47 rifle recovered from Shahzad.

The four other accused — Mohammad Sharif,Jung Bahadur Khan alias Baba,Mohammad Kaushar and Ghulab Khan — from UP are accused of harbouring the alleged terrorists and keeping weapons at their residence. The police had filed a chargesheet against them in the court of the Rampur Chief Judicial Magistrate in May 2008.

According to the case diary submitted in the court,Jung Bahadur and Sabauddin took the Pakistanis to the CRPF camp. While the Pakistanis entered camp and opened fire,Sabauddin and Jung Bahadur stood outside, armed with grenades. When the Pakistanis came out after the attack, the two hurled their grenades inside.
