Former Army Chief V K Singh asks media to maintain credibility

Former Army Chief General V K Singh on Monday alleged that the standard of journalism is falling, and asked the media to stick to high values for maintaining its credibility.

Cautioning media over its "shifting orientation", Singh said value-based journalism has vanished and the scenario needs to be positively changed.

He was speaking here at a programme organised by the vernacular newspaper 'Rajasthan Patrika'.

"Earlier, editors used to enjoy the first place... Today, editors play a role of news managers, owners hold prime position and the group goes along with the owner, with newspapers primarily promoting the agenda of the owner or the group," he said.

He said the condition of electronic media was no different.

"Most of the news channels are owned by businessmen or political parties and they have their own agenda," Singh said.

"This is not good for the media's future. Values and ethics should be there in the media so that it can play a constructive role in bringing a positive change in the society," he added.
